Keywords are words or short phrases people will type into a search engine. If the keywords for your site match the ones the typed in by someone else, your site will come up listed in the search engines result pages. The ranking (page and location) your site receives will depend on how well you choose your sites specific keywords. Remember keywords alone will not get you a high ranked site, there are several other factors that go alone with this (including blogging - see prior post) and will be discussed in later posts.
Keywords are hidden in the "head tag" of your sites code and are only visible if you view your sites page source. Typically keywords are only placed on the first page of your website but I suggest you put them on all pages (using specific keywords for each page) for better search engine results.
When adding keywords to your site I would suggest separating them with commas (although this is not necessary). You can put as many as you would like, but I would advise against more than 30-40. Many search engines regard pages with excess keywords as spam pages, and delete them from their index, and you don't want this! Don't spam the search engines! People are always trying to get their pages high ranked by cheating and adding in repeated keywords and phrases that don't even pertain to the content of their website. This is a bad thing, and when people click to visit your site and find the content not relevant the what they are searching for they will likely become angry and feel tricked. Apart from this, search engines are getting much better at seeing this happening and banning these pages or the entire site from their index.
Try not to repeat a keyword more than 3 times and this includes all your phrases, so decide carefully which words are going to fit best with each other.
Any questions? Meta Tag Descriptions are next......stay tuned!
